Drifting Through the Delta to Mekong Thai Cuisine

     We've known about Mekong Thai for some time.  The name conjured up newscasts of the Vietnam War for me, hearing about the Mekong Delta in that area of the world frequently.  That wouldn't be the case for most people, but maybe that's why I've inadvertently avoided it.  I was curious what the connection to Thailand was and found that the Mekong River flows along its northeast border.  But enough with the geography and history lessons.

      The restaurant has a pleasant entry, but the seating area is long and galley-like with booths on only one side visually enlarged with mirrors along the entire wall.  It's also quite dark, but if you were to trip, you could easily grab on to one of
the booths.  We took a booth

near the end and Eric started with a Thai Tea, his usual.  Their version was good and creamy.  While looking over the menu, we found some new dishes as well as our favorites.  Eric's Auntie Barbara had been visiting recently and made us Tom Yum (Hot & Sour Soup) that we found listed.  Hers was so good that we decided to pass.  I guess we weren't in the mood for trying something new so we stayed with the Basil Chicken and the Pad Thai with tofu.

My basil chicken was stir-fried with mushrooms, carrots, onions, bamboo shoots in a nicely spiced brown sauce.  Eric's Pad Thai was very good because the tofu had a texture that resembled meat, which is unusual.  The portions were generous and the service was attentive with the owner checking in with us for our feedback.  All in all, it was a pleasant experience, but probably not enough to win us over from some other favorite Thai restaurants in the area.  Certainly for people living in close proximity to Kenwood, this is a destination and a more than adequate find for take out.
